Loan #20: Nélida Miranda Huamaní

Nélida with our family in Cusco, July 2014

We are extending our 20th CuscoGracias loan to Nélida. We had the opportunity to get to know her and her family personally when we lived in Cusco in 2008-2009. She tutored our son, Tim, in Spanish. She was a high school student then, and now is working to complete her college degree in psychology. Given that we are friends with her on Facebook, we were able to write her a message and ask her to explain how she would be using the loan. Here is a rough translation (we did our best!):

"I am currently conducting research entitled 'Clinical Features of Personality in the Province of   the Convention-District of Santa Ana, in the Cusco Region in 2014' This research will help me to get a BA in psychology and be able to graduate from college. The research is not in the city of Cusco, so I have to travel a lot. The Convention and expenses will be lodging, meals and related research. When I get the results of the research, I have to hire a statistician to process my results, then I will make payments to the university for the following: to enroll, research, the appointment of juries, and support research as it is approved. I will make the graduation payment and eventually pay for membership in the College of Psychologists of Peru. Thank you very much for the support it would help me to take the first big step in my career."

We are excited to offer our 19th CuscoGracias loan to Felipa and Evaristo. Felipa received our 9th loan, and given how prompt and reliable she was in paying it back, we agreed to extend her and her husband another. They plan to use the money to continue to improve and buy more supplies for their store.

November 2014 Update

Our apologies for the delay in updating our website.  CuscoGracias has continued to operate during the past several months, thanks to your generous support/loans and to the hard work of our contact in Peru, Fania Salas Candia. We had the opportunity to meet with Fania in Cusco this past July, and she continues to collect loan payments and update us when we are ready to start new loans. We will add information about these recipients as we receive them.  Thank you again for your support of our program which continues to make a difference in the lives of people in Cusco.

On a different note, for any of you who might have visited Cusco and had the pleasure/opportunity to meet Jane, the owner of Jack's Cafe', we are tremendously sad to share the news of her passing this week due to cancer. She leaves behind her 12 year-old son, Jack, and those of us fortunate enough to have known her.  (pictured below with Jack)

Norka with Rick in her new pottery shop

This is our first repeat loan.  Norka received a loan two years ago and asked if we would consider giving her another one to help with the costs associated with opening her second pottery shop.  Given that she was so reliable and prompt in paying it back the first time, we immediately agreed.  Thanks to all of those people who are part of this loan and the program in general!

Loan # 17: Michael Aquehua Loayza -- As of February 2015, Michael has paid back his loan!

Michael

We are offering the 17th loan to Michael.  He and his father have wanted to start a restaurant in Cusco for a while, but with the interest on bank loans being so high in Peru, they have not been able to get a break to do this.  This loan will give them this opportunity.  We met Michael through a soccer school in Cusco (see picture below), which is an outreach to local children there.  Michael is one of the coaches.

As always, we will keep you updated when he pays back the loan and you can decide whether to get your money back or re-loan it to another recipient.
